October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

You certainly don't have to look far to see that something PINK is happening this month! Yes, it's breast cancer awareness month and it seems that people are walking, running, riding, coloring their hair pink and doing whatever they can to help raise awareness and funding for breast cancer research.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women, affecting 1 in 8 women during their lifetime. In the U.S. and Canada this year, approximately 315,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed, and there will be over 45,000 deaths from the disease. Of these numbers, about 3,300 of the new cases will be men. Yes, men also get breast cancer.

As with any cancer, early diagnosis increases the chance of survival. This is a good time for a reminder - check your girls on a monthly basis, have your doctor check them annually, and if you haven't had your annual mammogram yet, book one this month.

More useful information and tips are available from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure website.

At The Gift MD, we are here to help build awareness for many causes, including Breast Cancer. We have a variety of pink ribbon designs on several different products including t-shirts, greeting cards, mugs, Christmas ornaments, tote bags, buttons, stickers... the list goes on!

Here is a small sampling from our Breast Cancer Awareness category:

National Cancer Survivors Day

This year Sunday, June 3 marks the 25th annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Since 1987, the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation has chosen the first Sunday in June to celebrate cancer survivorship and to show the world that life after cancer can be both meaningful and productive. "Survivor" is defined as anyone living with a history of cancer - from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.

This event is celebrated in communities across The United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia and many other countries worldwide. For more information please visit the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation's website.

Here is a sampling of some of our designs and products suitable for celebrating survivorship. These designs come from our "All Cancer" ribbon category, but you can find similar products and designs by visiting The Gift MD to shop by ribbon color - it's just what the doctor ordered!

Last call to Help us Beat Ovarian Cancer!

Re-posted from March.

This year, Sunday May 13 marks the 10th anniversary of the Run for Ovarian Cancer in London, Ontario.

All funds raised during this event are dedicated to research focused on advanced disease and to discovering a cure for ovarian cancer, going directly toward the Translational Ovarian Cancer Research Program at the London Health Sciences Centre. Since 2003, this run generates the largest amount of funding for LHSC of any non-profit organization in London with only a one-day event!

Once again, our sister site, SunflowerSisters.ca, has entered a team of family and friends to participate in this event and we are committed to not only meeting, but to surpassing last year's fundraising efforts.

To show support for this worthy cause The Gift MD is pleased to announce that:

We will donate 100% of ALL royalties earned on ALL sales in our Zazzle store through TheGiftMD.com for the next 2 months!

You read that right! From March 13 until May 13, 2012 (run day), ALL royalties earned on purchases of The Gift MD awareness products will go directly to sponsor Team Sunflower Sisters in the Run for Ovarian Cancer.

Please pass this good news on to family, friends, co-workers.... and to complete strangers for that matter! Raise awareness for your favourite cause while supporting research for a cure for ovarian cancer - the deadliest of all gynaecological cancers.

If you are in the area and wish to join our team, or if you would like to make a cash donation towards this cause, please visit the Sunflower Sisters Team Page.

Remember, if US$ is not your home currency, visit TheGiftMD.com and click on the links to any of our international sites. Royalties earned at our international sites will also count towards this campaign.

Thank you for your generous support!

World Health Day - 2012

World Health Day is observed on April 7 every year, marking the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948.

Each year, a theme is chosen which focuses on current global health issues. This year's theme is about ageing and health - a topic which surely concerns all of us, for our own health and for the health of our older loved ones. The slogan chosen for this year is "Good health brings life to years" and focuses on how good health throughout life can help older men and women to lead full and productive lives and continue to contribute to society and family well into their advanced years.

We are living in a time of a rapidly ageing population. Worldwide, more and more people are living well into their 80's and 90's and at the same time birthrates are falling. Governments and health care organizations are going to need to find new and sustainable ways to cope with the financial and medical aspects of this demographic shift.

What Happens on World Health Day?
Various events are organized on a local, national and an international level. Events such as conferences for health workers, briefings for local politicians, and informational displays for children and young people. Public informational media coverage, displays and activities will be geared towards the needs of the region. For this year, North America will certainly hear about topics such as the importance of healthy diets and physical fitness at all ages.

To learn more about World Health Day, visit the World Health Organization website.

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day

Autism is a neural development disorder, which affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. It affects 9 in 1,000 children and is usually diagnosed before the age of 3, with early symptoms being impaired social and communication development - both verbally and non-verbally, and repetitive behaviour.
The cause of Autism is not clear, however it is believed that genetics may play a role and there are studies indicating environmental factors may also be involved.
Treatment for Autism includes intensive skill-oriented training focused on the specific needs of the child, and in some cases medications are used to treat specific symptoms such as depression, anxiety or seizures.

Do you love a child with Autism? Show your support and raise awareness with one of The Gift MD's "I Love a Child with Autism" products:

Ring the Bell!

Overheard at a cancer center this week:  "I'm going to ring that bell, and then run like hell!", followed by a loud eruption of laughter from everyone within earshot. If laughter is the best medicine then everyone got a good dose of it that day!

The "Ring the Chemo Bell" ceremony is practiced at most cancer centers worldwide. It signifies a patient's FINAL chemotherapy or radiation treatment, and is cause for great celebration for the patient and their loved ones. It brings feelings of hope and optimism to others who are courageously undergoing their own treatments.

This was the inspiration for our latest design which is now being rolled out across all cancer categories at The Gift MD:
