World Health Day is observed on April 7 every year, marking the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948.
Each year, a theme is chosen which focuses on current global health issues. This year's theme is about ageing and health - a topic which surely concerns all of us, for our own health and for the health of our older loved ones. The slogan chosen for this year is "Good health brings life to years" and focuses on how good health throughout life can help older men and women to lead full and productive lives and continue to contribute to society and family well into their advanced years.
We are living in a time of a rapidly ageing population. Worldwide, more and more people are living well into their 80's and 90's and at the same time birthrates are falling. Governments and health care organizations are going to need to find new and sustainable ways to cope with the financial and medical aspects of this demographic shift.
What Happens on World Health Day?
Various events are organized on a local, national and an international level. Events such as conferences for health workers, briefings for local politicians, and informational displays for children and young people. Public informational media coverage, displays and activities will be geared towards the needs of the region. For this year, North America will certainly hear about topics such as the importance of healthy diets and physical fitness at all ages.
